This package contains C software to implement JPEG image compression and decompression. JPEG (pronounced "jay-peg") is a standardized compression method for full-color and gray-scale images. JPEG is intended for compressing "real-world" scenes; line drawings, cartoons and other non-realistic images are not its strong suit. JPEG is lossy, meaning that the output image is not exactly identical to the input image. Hence you must not use JPEG if you have to have identical output bits. However, on typical photographic images, very good compression levels can be obtained with no visible change, and remarkably high compression levels are possible if you can tolerate a low-quality image.

NEW: Motif Interface on the original version of Timidity
TiMidity is a MIDI to WAVE converter that uses Gravis Ultrasound(*)-compatible patch files to generate digital audio data from General MIDI files. The audio data can be played through any sound device or stored on disk. On a fast machine, music can be played in real time.
You need MMOV 2.0 (multimedia Services for OpenVMS V 2.0) to play midi files in real time on good contidions on your Alphastation (and SYSNAM privileges to connect to Multimedia server; timidity is linked /notraceback to allow image installation with SYSNAM privilege).
Modified by Arne Bergseth (30 January 2000):
Modified AMD audio output to allow both buffers to be queued at the same time.
Included Motif user interface in the program.
Introduced mailbox I/O to communicate with Motif user interface.
Minor changes to avoid compiler warnings.
Routines changed: AMD_A.C COMMON.C COMMON.H CONFIG.H GETOPT.C MOTIF.H MOTIF_C.C MOTIF_I.C MOTIF_I.C MOTIF_M.C RESAMPLE.C TIMIDITY.C WAVE_A.C
P. Moreau (23 February 2000):
New COMPILE_MMOV_MOTIF.COM to build on alpha with MMOV and Motif interface;
Works great.
Added object and executables for Alpha VMS 6.2 with MMOV & Motif

Ghostscript is an implementation of Adobe Systems' PostScript (tm) language, which is in turn similar to Forth. Gs reads files in sequence and executes them as Ghostscript programs. After doing this, it reads further input from the standard input stream (normally the keyboard). Each line is interpreted separately.

The x11perf program runs one or more performance tests and reports timings of the operations.
Many graphics benchmarks assume that the graphics device is used to display the output of a single fancy graphics application, and that the user gets his work done on some other device, like a terminal. Such benchmarks usually measure drawing speed for lines, polygons, text, etc.

xmbase-grok, formerly just called "grok", is a simple database manager and UI builder that can: * keep phone and address lists (like a rolodex) * store phone call logs * keep todo lists * manage any other database after simple GUI-driven customization * customized data export, HTML export built in * basic chart support
The VMS port has some limitations: sections and procedural databases are not available yet. However, in the current state grok is already very useful. Don't bother the author if you have questions about the VMS port.

t1lib is a library distributed under the GNU General Public Library License for generating character- and string-glyphs from Adobe Type 1 fonts under UNIX. t1lib uses most of the code of the X11 rasterizer donated by IBM to the X11-project. But some disadvantages of the rasterizer being included in X11 have been eliminated.
The original distribution already contains support for OpenVMS. The version from this server contains one small fix to enable the use of absolute pathnames for font files on OpenVMS. (Martin P.J. Zinser)

ImageMagick TM, version 5.1.0, is a robust collection of tools and libraries to read, write, and manipulate an image in any of the more popular image formats including GIF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, and Photo CD. With ImageMagick you can create GIFs dynamically making it suitable for Web applications. You can also resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce, or add special effects to an image and save your completed work in the same or differing image format. You can access ImageMagick functions directly from the command line using the ImageMagick tools convert, mogrify, montage, combine, or identify. Use the display program to interactively manipulate your images or animate an image sequence from a graphical panel. Finally you have access to the various image processing methods directly from your favorite application development environment: Perl, C++, C, or Java. These programs and much more are explained by following the links from this page or read the ImageMagick Users Guide.
