WAON 0.1A (12-NOV-1990)

WAW to MIDI converter- Author: Kengo Ichiki ichiki@geocities.com
Licenced under Gnu General Public Licence
VAX: DEC C 5.2, VMS 6.2 - Alpha: DEC C 5.2, VMS 6.2

WaoN is a Wave-to-Notes transcriber, that is, the inverse of '
timidity' (and its descendants timidity++, and timidity with Gtk+).
("WaoN" also has a meaning of harmony of notes or chord in Japanese!)

Waon makes intensive use of Discrete Fourier Transforms via the FFTW library. I've ported under VMS FFTW v 2.1.2 (not difficult, just a recompile). FFTW sources and object libraries are provided with Waon kit. BTW, the result is fine and Waon is really (with some playing with parameters) able to produce a midi file sometimes very close of the original (if you only have one instrument).

xbattle is a concurrent multi-player battle strategy game that captures the dynamics of a wide range of military scenarios. It is based on X windows, which you must have installed to run this game. Players play from separate displays, and commands are executed concurrently, i.e. the players do not take "turns", they all issue their commands simultaneously. There can be any number of players, and each player is assigned to a color team (or black, white & gray for monochrome monitors). The game board is a matrix of squares that can be occupied by colored troops, and the aim of the game is to eliminate the enemy from the board by attacking squares occupied enemy troops.

Xblackjack is a MOTIF based tool constructed to get you ready for the casino. It was inspired by a book called "Beat the Dealer" by Edward O. Thorp, Ph.D. of UCLA. A number of important statistics are maintained for display, and used by the program to implement Thorp's "Complete Point System" (high-low system).

Beginners can learn a basic strategy which doesn't require counting. The best strategy employs a simple card counting technique which can be used to distinguish favorable situations. Avid players can learn to compute Thorp's high-low index, which takes the number of unseen cards into account.

You need to direct a beam of light into the exit door, after destroying objects on the field (when all objects are destroyed the door opens ...). To direct the beam, you rotate mirrors held by little gnomes. Very nice graphics.

Daemonic X labyrinth is a labyrinth game under X11 that is played directly with the mouse pointer: the walls block the pointer's movement on the screen. The goal of the game is to retrieve the four colored squares: to retrieve a square, it is sufficient to move the pointer over it, and it will disappear. However, to make things more infuriating, the squares have to be taken in the following order: red, yellow, green and blue. When the blue square is obtained, the game is won.

JPEG library - Author: The Independent JPEG Group

VAX: DEC C 5.0, VMS 6.1 - Alpha: DEC C 5.2, VMS 6.2

This package contains C software to implement JPEG image compression and decompression. JPEG (pronounced "jay-peg") is a standardized compression method for full-color and gray-scale images. JPEG is intended for compressing "real-world" scenes; line drawings, cartoons and other non-realistic images are not its strong suit. JPEG is lossy, meaning that the output image is not exactly identical to the input image. Hence you must not use JPEG if you have to have identical output bits. However, on typical photographic images, very good compression levels can be obtained with no visible change, and remarkably high compression levels are possible if you can tolerate a low-quality image.

The goal of PMX is to facilitate the efficient production of scores and parts that have an almost professional appearance. It can do all the work involved in setting up \notes-\enotes groupings, selecting groups of notes to be beamed, defining beam heights and slopes, spreading the entire piece evenly over a specified number of systems, and inserting extra spaces where needed to make room for accidentals, flags, dots, and new clefs.

To run PMX, you can use PMX.COM script (there are 2 passes of PMX and 3 passes of MusiXTeX).

You are required to build and maintain a city. You must feed, house, provide jobs and goods for your residents. You can build a sustainable economy with the help of renewable energy and recycling, or you can go for broke and build rockets to escape from a pollution ridden and resource starved planet, it's up to you. Due to the finite resources available in any one place, this is not a game that you can leave for long periods of time.

By default, the games uses a 640x480 geometry, but you can use a full screen geometry with the -d option (IT IS wonderfull !!)

You need MMOV 2.0 (multimedia Services for OpenVMS V 2.0) to play midi files in real time on good contidions on your Alphastation (and SYSNAM privileges to connect to Multimedia server; timidity is linked /notraceback to allow image installation with SYSNAM privilege).

I've added the AMD audio device support (taken from Xlockmore source distribution). The result is not very good but however on Alpha its audible. It also run on VAX but you need a very fast one !!

Although the software is copyrighted, it is available for free and can be redistributed without fee.

The ImageMagick image display program can display an image on any workstation screen running an X server. It can read and write many of the many of the more popular image formats including JPEG, TIFF, PNM, GIF, and Photo CD. In addition you can interactively resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce, or add special effects to an image and save your completed work. In addition to the image display program, ImageMagick also has command line programs that perform many functions and efefcts.

ACM 4.7 (29-MAR-1997)

Flight Simulator - Author: Riley Rainey rainey@netcom.com
Licence: GNU General Public Licence
VAX: DEC C 5.0, VMS 6.1 - Alpha DEC C 5.0 , VMS 6.1

This is a re-release of ACM 4.7 for VMS, source only, with modifications ti support build with DEC C 5.2. The old version with VMS binaries is also available.

ACM is a LAN-oriented, multiplayer aerial combat simulation. Main design
objective was to provide source code that could be easily compiled and
executed on a wide variety of platforms. To that end, acm is written entirely
in C, exploiting the programming features of Unix, X11, and the BSD socket
interface.

Players engage in air to air combat against one another using heat seeking
missiles and cannons.

ACM is implemented as two programs. The first, named "acm", is a small
program that, when invoked, starts a flight session on a given workstation.
The second component, named "acms", is a server process that manages the
multiplayer environment. It also manages the flight simulation and
display management that is required. Most players will prefer to run the
acms process on a back-end server system on their local area network. Players
at client workstations can then invoke the acm program to begin play.

XPM 3.4 J (14-FEB-1997)

X Pixmap Library - Author: Arnaud Le Hors - Bull
Licence: free usage and distribution - See COPYRIGHT. file
VAX: VAX C 3.2, VMS 5.5-2; DEC C 5.0, VMS 6.1 - Alpha: DEC C 5.0, VMS 6.2

XPM (X PixMap) is a format for storing/retrieving X pixmaps to/from files.

Here is provided a library containing a set of four functions, similar to the X bitmap functions as defined in the Xlib: XpmCreatePixmapFromData, XpmCreateDataFromPixmap, XpmReadFileToPixmap and XpmWriteFileFromPixmap for respectively including, storing, reading and writing this format, plus four other: XpmCreateImageFromData, XpmCreateDataFromImage, XpmReadFileToImage and XpmWriteFileFromImage for working with images instead of pixmaps.

This new version provides a C includable format, defaults for different types of display: monochrome/color/grayscale, hotspot coordinates and symbol names for colors for overriding default colors when creating the pixmap. It provides a mechanism for storing information while reading a file which is re-used while writing. This way comments, default colors and symbol names aren't lost. It also handles "transparent pixels" by returning a shape mask in addition to the created pixmap.

HANGAR 1.2 (13-JAN-1997)

Hangar for Digital's Flight - Author: Patrick Moreau pmoreau@cena.dgac.fr
Licence: GNU General Public Licence
VAX: VMS 6.x, Alpha: VSM 6.x , Flight 3.1

Hangar made of various object derived from original world or hangar flight objects. Some are rather interesting, especially two gas balloons. The Archimede force is unknown under Flight, and I was forced to emulate it via a vectored thrust bound on a nozzle (like the ones on the Harrier AV8-B, controled with F9-F10). When the nozzle is vertical, you have a good approximation of a balloon launch. With a little pitch, you have simulated the wind (or the motors of the Zepplin). Some alternate pilot view are implemented (you can see them with PF4 Fn combination, the default view is retreived with PF4 F1)

Objects available are: A balloon, a zepplin, Supercopter (Air Wolf), an autonomous pilot, new versions of Bofors AA batteries, a Mosquito and a V22 Osprey with spinning propellers, an armed RV-4, a Crusader and a Typhoon.

Licence: Gnu GeneralPublic Licence
VAX: VAX C 3.2, VMS 5.5-2 or DEC C, VMS 6.1 - Alpha: DEC C 5.0, VMS 6.2

This program "solves" the n-body problem, and displays the results on the screen. It starts by putting a bunch of stars on the screen, and then it lets the inter-body gravitational forces move the stars around. The result is a lot of neat wandering paths, as the stars interact and collide.

XStar can be used to animate the root window, as a screen saver or just to display stuff in a regular window.
